What’s an “Internist”?

An Internist is a physician who diagnoses and provide non-surgical treatment of diseases and injuries of internal organ systems. Internists provide care mainly for adults who have a wide range of problems associated with the internal organs.

Because they treat a broad range of problems they are usually the doctor that adults see as their primary physicians. Internists also work with patients to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevent disease. They often treat conditions such as common colds and the flu, but also treat chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Internal Medicine vs. Family Medicine

What’s the difference between an Internal Medicine practice and a Family Medicine practice? They both treat similar conditions, often act as a primary care provider, and refer patients to a specialist when needed. The difference is in the type of patients they treat. If your mother had the sniffles, you wouldn’t take her to see a pediatrician even though they treat colds and flu. A pediatrician specializes in treating children. Likewise, an internist is a physician who specializes in the treatment of adults. That leaves Family Medicine practices. Family medicine physicians typically treat patients of any age.

As a result, you will often find internists working in a hospital setting. Many internal medicine physicians also practice outpatient medicine.

The internists at Internal Medicine Practice are affiliated with Meritus Health, so if you ever require more specialized care we can refer you to a local specialist while continuing to monitor and coordinate your care.
